Artist Statement

As a ceramic artist I feel a strong awareness of the material itself. There is so much beauty just within the clay body.  There is no doubt that my surroundings here in Colorado have an impact on my work. My love of the outdoors, the mountains, and simply the rock formations that surround us here are beloved in my ceramics. A style and design rooted in the natural world has always been central to my work, and many have commented that it is reminiscent of artifacts found in an archaeological dig.

The distress in the surface texture suggests thoughts of the deep layers of clay found under the earth's crust, and the millions of years it took to decay and erode from rock into this physical medium. An integrative quality of my work is to evoke a response through touch. Surface design and texture are emphasized to entice the viewer to interact with the pieces and pull the eye around them. Through this interaction, it is my hope that the viewer will find a connection to the earth and to one another.

Balance between wheel throwing and slab construction is a primary focus of my ceramics.  My approach in the merging of these methods is to create a unified piece that embodies a naturalistic form. In my work I treat the progression of each piece with equal attention and care as it emerges from the bag a mass of clay, to its formation in shape and design, and finally to its glazing and firing. I find the relationship between the clay body and the glaze to be particularly compelling. Unlike many other mediums, the glazing and firing of ceramics can be whimsical and often lead to unexpected and fascinating results. Always through the process, I find myself wishing the work well as it moves through its development, embracing any "mistakes" not as such, but discoveries instead.

Above: This series of work was fired in reduction. These pieces were glazed inside with a white lava glaze. The silicone carbide mixed in this glaze interacted with the manganese in the clay body, erupting through the glaze creating a bluish, bubbly effect.
